When it comes to planning your wedding, it’s important to keep in mind what the day is all about —you and your future spouse! When looking through Pinterest all day, it’s easy to be consumed by little details and wanting everything to be picture perfect. While of course you’d want your wedding day to be beautiful, you should also consider ways to incorporate your personalities, quirks, and families into your day too. Here are my two cents on a few ways to add personal touches to your wedding day — take a look!
Honoring Family Members Who Cannot Be in Attendance
Your wedding day is such a special day in your life, and it can sometimes be difficult to imagine this occasion without some of nearest and dearest who may no longer be with us. There are many ways to honour those who have passed away during your big day. Some couples like to add a locket or charm with their picture in it to the bouquet or sewn into their wedding attire. You can also have a few pictures of them set up at the entrance of your ceremony. Perhaps “reserve” a seat in their honour in the front row. Or even play a song that reminds you of them during the ceremony or for a first dance. Whatever feels right to you in honouring their memory can help make the day a little bit easier.
Show Off Your Favorite TV Shows or Movies
Do you find yourself flicking on Netflix with your s/o only to fall asleep to ten minutes in? Consider paying homage to your favourite movies throughout your day (and ‘fessing up to it!) One of my favourite ways to do this is by using quotes in the ceremony program or on a welcome sign. If you want to add a playful touch, have a fun appetizer or dessert inspired by the show. You can also incorporate a song used in the movie or show during the ceremony or reception. Try looking up instrumentals for a more subtle touch!
Serve a High End Version of Your Favourite Food
Are you and your future spouse big pizza fans? Or perhaps your go-to spot is Timmies (for a 10-pack of timbits)? Whatever your favourite food is, there are so many ways to dress it up and enjoy it at your Ontario wedding. For pizza, consider personal gourmet pizzas, or even little baby pizza bites for an appetizer. If tacos are more your speed, have a taco bar or serve little open face tacos during cocktail hour. A “mini” version of anything can feel much more gourmet than it normally would be in full size- and it’s cost efficient as well!
Bring out the bubbly and start pouring some of your favourite mocktails and/or cocktails! Make up some drinks after you and your fiancé(e) to serve at the bar. Go for classic well drinks or make up something totally unique. For an added bonus, make a date night out of it and try out a mixology class near you. If you’re not interested in alcohol or keeping the night virgin- there’s tons of non-alcoholic recipes out there as well. You can name them after yourselves or come up with fun names based off the ingredients involved.
Unity ceremonies are a beautiful way to mix up your ceremony. These small visual shows of your commitment are really a great way to add a special touch to the occasion. Some of my favorites include sand (layering two colors of sand into one jar so that they are mixed into one), a unity candle (lighting one candle with two individual ones to form one flame), or even a unity rope (in religious ceremonies, this is a 3 fold braid to symbolize God’s role in marriage- or you can simply do two strands twisted together and knotted to create one stronger rope). All of these are great ways to personalize your ceremony and further symbolize your commitment.
